Area information and history

You may have noticed the welcome signs for the city of Island Park.  The population of only a couple hundred seems odd, but it is true.  Our actual city boundaries narrowly lie 100 yards on either side of the “Old U.S. Highway 20” and stretch for over 33 miles.   It boasts the “longest Main Street in the world.”  Island Park is more widely known as a recreational area as a whole, not just by the city boundaries.   The small communities you have passed getting here including Pinehaven, Last Chance, Elk Creek, Macks Inn and Island Park Village all are part of Island Park as well as many areas including Shot Gun, Bill’s Island, Buffalo Summer Homes and all the areas around Island Park Reservoir and Henry’s Lake.

It is said that years ago when the lodges along the highway needed to get liquor licenses they were required to be within city limits.  Thus, the city was created and followed the winding highway to include them all.

You are now staying at the location of the former Sunset Lodge and ski hill.  The ski lift was taken down years ago and trees have begun to grow, but you can still see the runs from a distance.   Please feel free to walk or bicycle up the mountain behind the cabin.  Our neighbors have an easement, so you may see them driving to their cabin, but we ask that no motorized vehicles be taken up the mountain.  As you will see the road is not suitable for cars beyond a certain point and we don’t want anyone getting hurt.  The view is breathtaking and worth every step if you choose to go even a few hundred yards up the hill.

Our family purchased the land in 2014 and we hope you enjoy our little neck of the woods.  We have lived in Island Park since 1972 and are thrilled to be able to share it with you.   Our family owns Last Chance Construction LLC and we all pitched in to build this cabin.  If you like it, feel free to tell others!

The family atmosphere is abundant in Island Park and we hope you enjoy all the opportunities including fishing, hunting, floating rivers, touring Yellowstone, snowmobiling, ATV riding and nature watching just to name a few!

Our future plans include several more cabins ranging from small honeymoon size to larger lodges as we move up the hill.  Keep us in mind for your next Yellowstone vacation! See you soon!

Enjoy your visit!
